Several rockets hit a US army base and an office of a Kurdish news channel in Erbil, northern Iraq.
At least five “Iranian-made ballistic missiles” hit the city in the early hours of Sunday, Governor Omed Khoshnaw confirmed.
He said it was unclear whether the missiles were targeting the US consulate at the site or the city’s airport.
There were “victims or injuries after the explosions in Erbil” said Kurdish Health Minister Saman Barzanji. US officials later confirmed that there were no military casualties from the explosions.
No other details were immediately available, but videos posted online appeared to show several “Iranian-produced” ballistic missiles hitting the Erbil base.
Iraqi Shia Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr said on Twitter: “Erbil is under fire…as if the Kurds weren’t Iraqis.”
