Missouri kicker Harrison Mevis is a cult legend in college football. But he made a big mistake on Wednesday night.
After finishing the regular season at 6-6, the Tigers were invited to play in the Armed Forces Bowl. Played at TCU Stadium in Fort Worth, Missouri traveled south to face the United States Military Academy, better known as the Army.
Just before half-time, Mevis was called into the field for a 39-yard attempt. At 5 feet 11 inches and 236 pounds, Mevis is better known as “thicker.”
As the clock ticked in the second quarter, he scored his third basket of the first half and gave Missouri the lead 16-7. However, he made a huge mistake.
Mevis, after the kick had passed through the uprights, came to attention and gave a very embellished salute.
It was a wild gesture that, in almost any other situation, would have been funny.
What happened next, however, turned it into anything but.
Army started the third quarter running 75 yards on 17 plays, finding the end zone and reducing the lead to two. The Black Knights forced a three-and-out, covered 56 yards in six and a half minutes and took a 21-16 lead.
The Tigers tried to put the game on with a touchdown as the clock ticked back to 1:11, but it wasn’t enough. The military took over, covered 51 yards in seven plays, and moved closer to the range.
In the eighth play of the drive and the last play of the game, Army scored 41 yards to win it in walk-off mode.
Mevis’ stolen value looks ridiculous after the loss. Never, ever disrespect the troops.
